Every quarter, our specialists interpret trends in the global economy and financial markets. Read their views on the fourth quarter of 2017.

Macroeconomic environment

  • The improvement in global economic growth continues to be fragile due to the scale of the financial, political and social risks.
  • The weakness of inflationary pressures and the continuing massive recourse to debt are not conducive to the normalisation of monetary policies.
  • There is no sign of a sustainable improvement in debt-to- GDP ratios.

Financial markets

  • None of the traditional asset classes offer attractive longterm return prospects.
  • In many respects, bonds are riskier than equities.
  • The eurozone’s substantial current account surplus makes the euro a strong currency.
